Why is the “Verified” column on the course list?

The reason for this is that a lot of courses in SA were mapped via Google Earth.

In some areas, the Google Earth images are “out” compared to the actual coordinates. For instance, the  Gary Player Country Club was mapped physically with a cell phone on the course. If you look at the photo below you will notice the red balloons with 3 in them. They mark the physically mapped p.o.i. where I physically stood at the front/middle of the green and mapped the coordinates. Just to give you an idea of how “out” the Google Earth image can be, look where the green is on the 3rd hole 🙂 So the image is way too far up and left compared to the actual coordinate.

But the story doesn’t end there…. This “error” is not consistant around the country or even on one course 🙂 Look at the 9th hole…

Here the red flags/ physically mapped poi are very nearly on the correct spot on the Google Earth image. 🙂

So that is why we added the “Verified” column…

Because

  1. 32 out of the 95 courses that were mapped via Google Earth have been found to be accurate. So we can’t discount a Google Earth course as automatically inaccurate. We first have to have someone verify the status.
  2. The Google Earth discrepancy is not consistent as the images above show.
  3. We don’t want to claim something that is not true. So for the sake of transparency we let new subscribers know, via our course list that some courses need to be verified.
