Thanks to Gerhardus for verifying that State Mines Country Club, 30 Hewitt Rd Brakpan North, Gauteng, (Originally mapped via Google Earth) is accurate. This brings the total number of verified courses to 111 out of 179
If you have a look at our course list you will notice a verified column. That is because there is a descrepancy with Google Earth’s coordinates in some areas of the world. We decided to add a “Verified” comlumn to our list for sake of transparency so that all courses that were mapped on Google Earth first has to be verified as accurate by a Wegolfer who has played there before we change the status to Verified on our official course list. In that way, we ensure the integrity of the list as not to advertise a course as accurate when it is not. Every course that was mapped physically with a cell phone is 100% accurate. Google Earth mapped courses have to be verified first…

It can’t be stressed enough what a huge part of the Wegolf offering the website, www.wegolf.com is. If you use Wegolf as an electronic scorecard, your rounds are stored and all sorts of stats are kept on your game. When you log in to the site using your cell number in international format (2782 instead of 082…) as username and the last four digits of your cell number as password, you’ll get access to the stats about your game…

Schoeman Park GC, Neighbour of Bloemfontein GC has been mapped. It is also located on the Maselspoort rd in Bloemfontein. This brings the total number of SA courses on the Wegolf database to 179.

Bloemfontein GC Clubhouse
Bloemfontein Golf Course, located on the Maselspoort rd, was mapped previously via Google Earth but has now been physically re-mapped with a cell phone 🙂
Even though the total number of courses mapped didn’t increase when Bloemfontein was physically mapped, it does mean that the amount of “Physically verified” courses on the Wegolf database has increased to 110 out of 178.

On Saturday, 5/9/2009 Wegolf sponsored a “Know your distance” drive competition on the first hole of Orkney Golf Club in the Northwest Province. Everybody who wanted to participate wrote down their prediction of how far they would hit at the Wegolf table on the first tee…
And then We (pun intended) were positioned behind a tree at the 220m mark with cell phones with Wegolf on to measure the actual distance that everybody hit if they hit on the fairway.
I was hoping the photo will show the nice Wegolf logo on our hats and shirts, but no luck… At least you know what the logo looks like 🙂

Now for some facts about the day:
- Mr Rory Curtley predicted 240m and hit 238m according to Wegolf and thereby won a Wegolf CD worth R499 for being only 2m out 🙂 (The closest guess on the day)

- Of all the people that ended on the fairway, the average predicted distance they gave before they hit was 221.77m compared to the actual distance they hit on the fairway of 223.03m. So it looks like golfers who hit on the fairway underestimate themselves a bit.
- Interesting to note that golfers who didn’t hit on the fairway, had an average prediction of 237.69m. Just a pity there shots weren’t measured as they were not on the fairway .
- The 3 balls whose golfers underestimated themselves were:
- Top flight golfers predicted 167m and hit 185m on average
- Noodle golfers predicted 210m and hit 226m on average
- Titliest golfers predicted 232 and hit 242m on average
- The 3 balls whose golfers overestimated themselves were:
- Taylormade golfers predicted 235m and hit 199m on average.
- Srixon golfers predicted 243m and hit 222m on average.
- Pinnacle golfers predicted 214m and hit 197m on average.
- This is how the brands compared to each other on the day as far as Wegolf measured distance goes… Please keep in mind that only balls in the fairway were measured for these stats (Hey Lourens and Marcu? 🙂 )

Sannieshof Golf Course in the Northwest province has been mapped.
This brings the total of SA courses that are mapped on the Wegolf database to 177.
As you can see on the photo below from the grain silos… agriculture plays a huge role in this part of SA, so if you are ever in the mood to “rough it” in the NW “platteland” and pay as much for a round of golf than you would for a beer at some big clubs… You can now have the benefit of using Wegolf for accurate distance readings here as well 🙂

Its now posible to view satellite images from within WeGolf on your cell phone.
The image of every hole is found under Courses -> Select your course -> Coord on map (in the options menu) You can drag the image up, down, right and left, go to next hole as well as zoom in for a closer view. The higher resolution the Google Earth image of the course, the better.
