Well, today I thought I’d measure it. I downloaded and used a free app called Sports Tracker on my Nokia N97 while using Wegolf on my Samsung Galaxy S2 for distance measurements and plotting my shots. (We used a cart and played 18 holes in only 2h52m and my N97′s battery died as I climbed into the car after the round. So it looks like the Sports Tracker app. uses a lot of battery power.)
Please click here to see the results of the Sports Tracker application for today’s round.
I couldn’t believe that we travelled 10.6km in total, while the distance on the scorecard is 6.458km. I was suprized to see that in one round, we travelled more than 4km extra compared to the scorecard distance, from the green to the next tee of each hole and looking for lost balls in the rough

The 2011 PGA Championship is starting this week. And they are allowing spectators onto the course with cell phones to make it possible for them to use a golf GPS app on the course.
This is a huge shift in mindset, and I think it reflects the organizers’ forward thinking on the issue of using cell phones on the course to enhance the spectator experience. Now, the spectators, standing near the competitor’s ball can see more or less how far he, for example, drove the ball and how far he has left to the green.
Not too long ago, I was told by a local club that I am not allowed to map the course as they don’t allow the use of cell phones during a round. I was very interested in the announcement by the PGA for the 2011 PGA Championship as it shows that cell phone golf GPS apps have become so popular that they are even allowing them at one of this year’s Majors.
