Let’s take an example of playing a round using distances only at a course that has already been mapped on Wegolf’s database.  I presume that you know how to start the round using distances only.

When you get to the hole where you want to add a poi you have to follow these steps:

  1. Your screen will be displaying the distances from your current position to poi previously mapped on that hole.
  2. You have to exit your round first. Do this by selecting Options, Cancel.
  3. Now go Back, Back until you are at the main menu.
  4. On the main menu, select Courses and the course that you want to add the poi on.
  5. You will see a scorecard. Go Options, GPS coordinates and select the hole that you want to add  the poi on.
  6. Now select New, select the name of the poi, where on object as well as side of fairway.
  7. Then go Options, Enable GPS.
  8. Then give it a couple of seconds for the satellites to get a good fix on your position.
  9. Then go Options, Save. to save the new poi and it’s coordinates.
  10. You have now created a new course called course name(private). This is because that version of the specific course with that extra poi is only on your cell phone. Therefor it’s names Orkney (Private) for instance.
  11. Now go Back, Back, Back until you are are the course list.
  12. To publish your new course with the extra poi to your private section of www.wegolf.net highlight the course name and select Options, Publish.
  13. Now you must go back to playing your round…
  14. Do this by going to the main menu of Wegolf and
  • Starting the round again if you use distances only
  • Resuming the round if you use Distance and score

Your cell phone camera and Wegolf

To use your camera during a round you will firstly need to select Distances and score when you start a new round.

And then, while using Wegolf during your round, you’ll get to the following screen where you enter you score and putts on a hole…

Screen to start camera from

To use the camera, you select Options, Camera on this screen and just snap your memory of a good shot or whatever. The photo will be Geo-Tagged, by Wegolf as long as your GPS is connected to the satellites when you take the photo.

Wegolf really utilizes you cell phone’s camera to the maximum by allowing you to capture memories of your golf exploits.

Here is an example of a round I played at Gary Player Country Club in 2008…On the 9th hole I played two shots and took a photo using Wegolf and my cell’s camera:

Second

And below you can see  how Wegolf Geo Tagged the photo to show where the photo was taken from on a satellite image…

Utilizing your cell phone’s camera to capture special golfing memories is just one of the great features of Wegolf.

Blackouts

What score must you write in on a hole where you get a “Blackout”?

Example : Par 4 Stroke 10 and your Handicap is 10:

If you play more than 6 shots,

  • In South Africa ,you normally write 6 with a ring on your score card for handicap purposes.
  • However, if you enter 6 on that hole with Wegolf, it automatically calculates a 6 for 1 point by default.
  • So, you have to enter at least 1 more than the amount of shots you are allowed on any hole for 1 point.
  • Then Wegolf will calculate  zero points for you on that hole.
  • So if you get a couple of blackouts in a round, your Wegolf score on your cell phone will be as many strokes more than the round you hand in for your handicap.
  • Please take part in our poll on this topic

Using Wegolf during a round.

  1. Make sure you cell phone’s battery is fully charged.
    • … I mean fully charged :) I normally charge it to capacity the night before a game and then, if possible, put it on a car charger on the way to the course. I like to see the Battery Fully Charged message before I take it off the car charger before the round.
  2. About 5 minutes before you tee off, I suggest that you start Wegolf on your phone.
    • The cell phone will prompt you if it should allow Wegolf to use positioning data…Say yes
    • You can always check  whether it is connected to the satellites.
  3. Start a new round by selecting Rounds, New from the main menu of Wegolf
  4. Now select a course by downloading it or selecting it from the list of courses that were already downloaded onto Edityour phone. previously.
    1. Also fitting in with the courses topic is the issue of mapping a course from scratch.
    2. If your course is not on the Wegolf course list, please contact us and maybe a deal can be struck to get the course mapped.
  1. Select one of these options…
    1. Distances
      1. You will only be able to see the distances to each poi mapped on the course from your current position. You will not be able to make use of features like measuring how far you hit each club or keep stats on your golf.
    2. Distances and score
      1. You will see the distance to all the poi mapped on the course from your current position as well as
        1. Be able to keep stats on your game.
        2. Use your cellphone as an electronic scorecard for your 4 ball.
        3. Be able to measure how far you hit each club.
    3. If you selected
      1. Distances only you will now see the distances to all the poi on the 1st hole. You can select any hole by going Options, Go to hole.
      2. Distances and score you can select the players that were created before or download them from your personal section of www.wegolf.net if you published them before.
        1. After selecting your players, select Options, Next.
  2. Now you will see a screen with heading Received Strokes, just select Options, Next.
  3. The screen will now display a scorecard of the course you selected as well as the players.
    1. Highlight the hole you will be starting from and go Options,Edit
  4. You will now see a screen displaying all the mapped poi on that hole as well as the distance from your current position to each one.
  5. POI

  6. At this screen, you are also to measure your strokes.
  7. Use this screen until you are finished playing the hole and then select Options, Score to enter the score.
  8. Just enter the score and putts for each player and select Options, OK.
  9. The cellphone will prompt you whether to send data now.
    1. This is up to you, but if you say yes, your round is published to the web in real time and you can share your round with anybody in the world if you want to. If you say no, the round info will be stored only on the phone and you can publish it to the www.wegolf.net site at a later stage.
  10. Then you just repeat the same procedure on every hole until you are finished.

On the main menu of Wegolf…

  1. Select Tools, GPS
  2. If your phone’s GPS receiver isn’t connected to the satellites at the time, you will  get a choice of
    1. Built in GPS
    2. Discover GPS
    3. Com Ports
  3. Choose the option that applies to your phone.
  4. The cell phone will then prompt you to allow Wegolf to use Positioning data. Say Yes.
  5. Once you’re connected to the satellites, you will see this screen:

Coordinates

  1. . Now select Back until you are on the main menu of Wegolf.

PS. Once your phone is connected to the satellites, you don’t need to follow these steps every time before you use Wegolf. But knowledge of these steps is important in that you can always just go to Tools,GPS in future to make sure the cell phone is connected to the satellites in future.

Only when the cell phone’s GPS receiver is disconnected for whatever reason, will you need to follow all the steps mentioned above again.

How to map a course using Wegolf with your cell phone…

Filed under: Helpful hints, How to map a course physically

1) On the main menu of Wegolf, you’ll select Courses.

2) Then you select New

3) Type in the course name and other info on this screen

4) Press Next

5) Now you will see a score card with all the holes’ par 4 and stroke 0. (You can fill the detail for each hole on your cell, but I find it more convenient to leave this part for later, when I am at my computer to enter this detail. So leave this for now and let’s start plotting POI…

6) Select options

7) Select GPS coordinates.

8) Select the hole that you are busy plotting.

9) Select New

10) Choose what the poi is, i.e. Green,Bunker,Tree etc.

11) Choose where on object the poi is, i.e. Front, Centre or Back

12) Choose which side of the fairway it is i.e., Left Middle or Right.

13) Then  select Options, enable GPS

14) Now you have to wait for the gps to register the coordinate. (normally the screen flickers very slightly when the coordinate is confirmed. Give it chance to flick 3/4 times until the coordinates stay the same after a flick :) )

15) The select options, save to save the poi

When you get to the green, with the latest version of Wegolf, you only have to map the Front/Middle and the Back/Middle of the green.Wegolf then automatically calculates the Green/Centre/Middle.

A person repeats these steps for every poi you want to plot on that hole. When you’ve mapped your last poi on a hole, you select back, to return to the list of holes (With the poi captured for each hole in brackets)

You then select the next hole you are on, and repeat the steps above until you have finished mapping all the poi on the course.

    • For your own records, you can also fill in the new player’s email addres and phone number, but that is optional.
