Just an update on the original post dated August 10 2009, concerning Wegolf and the Nokia N97…
With the latest version of Wegolf you can open the keyboard while using Wegolf without any problems. However I would still suggest that you still turn off the sensors to avoid the screen swopping from portrait to landscape while you use Wegolf. Please refer to the avove mentioned post for more detail on how to do it.

Thanks to Murray Donkin for physically mapping the front and back of all greens at Southbroom in Kwazulu Natal and then mapping the rest of the points of interest on the course via Google Earth at home after a “map correction”. This takes the number of physically verified courses on Wegolf’s database up to 118 out of 183.

Thanks to Ron Morobe for updating the score card info of Windsor Park in Randburg with the correct strokes and also verifying that the Google Earth mapped course is accurate. This brings the number of verified courses on the list to 117 out of 182 and counting

Thanks to Murray Donkin for physically mapping Pecanwood Golf & Country Club at the Hartebeespoortdam. Even though the total number of SA courses on the Wegolf database is still 182, the number of “Verified” courses is now 116.

There you are on Sunday morning early…. your better half has gone to visit the in-laws and left you to your own devices.( Wegolf of course your favourite.) my my… What to do?
Lets see…
Thinking of looking for a new course to play in your area? No problem
Wegolf can help if you follow these steps on your cell:
- Make sure you phone’s GPS receiver is connected to the satellites by selecting Tools,GPS. Just wait until you see coordinates displayed at this screen. (Preferably you will need to have an unobstructed view to the sky)
- Once the GPS is connected to the satellites, go back to the main menu of Wegolf and select Courses, Download.
- Because your GPS is connected, you will see one of the options is Nearby Courses, select it… The cell will prompt you whether to allow application to connect to the internet… say “Allow for this session.”
- You will now see a list of all the courses that are within 100km of your current position.
So there is problem one solved… you now have a list of all courses within 100km to pick from to play on this lovely Sunday.
You of course go ahead and download one by selecting it and then selecting Dload. You will now see it on the list of courses that are on your phone. But maybe you want to see the position of this newly found course on a map?
No problem again
Just highlight the course name and go Options, Map and voila! You can view the course on Google Maps.
But being the sucker for detail you are, you still want to know more about the course before you play there. What does the course layout look like? No problem again
- This time, select the course (Don’t just highlight it.) You will now see the score card details of the course displayed.
- Go Options, Coord on map.
- Your cell will now connect to the web to download a satellite image of the course. You can now familiarize yourself with the hole layout before you play the course.
And again, are you finished? No!
You still have to get to the course and with Wegolf it is very easy to save the course location as a “favourite” in your phone’s navigation software. Do this by selecting the course and again you will see the score card info. On this page go Options, Save for navigation.
You can now just open your navigation software of the phone and set the GPS software to navigate you turn by turn to the course.
Oh yeah, and let’s not forget that once you are at the course, you can now use Wegolf for what it’s best at. Supplying you with accurate distances on the course as well as a fantastic electronic score card with all its statistical features.
And O Yeah again…All this for only 44.95 Euro? (+- R499)
Unbelievable if you ask me

After just a couple of votes in the poll about what people do in SA when they get a blackout on a hole it is clear that nearly half the golfers take a double bogey when they get a blackout on a hole where they don’t stroke. According to the South African Golf Association site, under handicapping you will see the following:
5.2.3 A score for any hole, whether complete or incomplete in any round, is to be reduced to one stroke or a specified number of strokes over par for handicap purposes as follows:
(i) Where a player receives no handicap stroke – limit of one over Par.
(ii) Where a player receives one handicap stroke – limit of two over Par.
(iii) Where a player receives two handicap strokes – limit of three over Par.
What is clear to me now is that the change of the rule was not communicated properly to all golfers as approximately half of golfers take a double bogey for no IPS points when they blackout on a hole where they don’t stroke. Look out for a future version of Wegolf that will accommodate the correct way handling blackouts in SA

As this is an issue that comes up a lot when Wegolf subscribers contact us and after many discussions in our own Saturday fourball, I thought it best to create the following post concerning what you must do if you don’t score points on the IPS system on a hole…
According to http://www.saga.co.za/38/handicapping , the following must happen when you get a “blackout” on a hole: If you don’t stroke on a hole you write a bogey for 0 points. And not a double bogey as was the rule for a while.
Before Wegolf can have a version that reflects the way South Africans keep score it is important to hear from our SA users what system they follow when getting a blackout on a hole…
For example: If you have a 15 handicap and you play a Par 3, stroke 18…
